Content of the Course

The course “Fundamentals and Perspectives of the Energy Transition” provides in-depth knowledge about the increasing energy demand in society, the problem of limited resources and the various forms of energy generation (fossil fuels, nuclear power and renewable energies). Particular attention is paid to renewable energies and their various potentials and limitations as a contribution to sustainable development. The theoretical content of the events is repeatedly enriched with examples and concludes with an outlook on possibilities for transformation.

Acquisition of Competences

  • Understanding of the concept of sustainability, the problem of limited resources and the need for sustainable development
  • Recognition of the influence of human activity on the geosphere and biosphere
  • In-depth knowledge of the current increase in energy demand and its causes
  • Learning the basics of energy generation
  • In-depth knowledge of energy generation from fossil fuels, nuclear power and in particular from renewables
  • Ability to explain the respective potentials and limits of the various types of energy generation
  • Knowledge of the potentials and challenges of transforming the energy landscape with renewable energies

Exam Information

To receive a certificate of achievement and credit points, you must complete the course with an electronic exam. You can choose the examination date freely from several examination times in the semester. The examination takes place in presence.

  • Students of the University of Bremen take their exams in the university's test center.
  • Students from partner universities of the Virtual Academy of Sustainability take their exams on dates at their home university.

Target Group

The course is open to students of all disciplines. The offer is especially addressed to students of the University of Bremen and students of the partner universities of the Virtual Academy Sustainability. The content is designed as OER (Open Educational Resources) and therefore available for all interested parties. In principle, the learning videos can also be used in non-university settings. Thus, learners from other groups (e.g. companies) also have the opportunity to benefit from them.

Lecturers of the Course

Dr. Robert Taube is a lecturer at Bremen University of Applied Sciences. He is a biologist and conducts research into the blue economy and blue sciences in particular. As part of his work, he also teaches on the subject of renewable energies.
