Virtual Academy of Sustainability (VAS)

The Virtual Academy of Sustainability (VAS) was launched in 2011 and funded by the German Federal Environmental Foundation (DBU). In 2016, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) took over the funding for this institution. The actual implementation was carried out by the Chair of Business Administration, in particular Sustainable Management at the University of Bremen in cooperation with the Center for Multimedia in Teaching and Learning (ZMML). Since 2021, the Virtual Academy of Sustainability is a scientific institution of the University of Bremen.

The VAS targets education for sustainable development and the implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals in university teaching. The tasks of the VAS are in particular:

• Coordination of the teaching offer of the VAS
• Development of digital learning formats for sustainability topics and design of research-oriented teaching in the digital space.
• Transfer of research and development results to business, society and politics through cooperation with companies and organizations by offering digital continuing education events with sustainability topics for practitioners.

Board of Directors

The board of directors of the VAS consists of the managing director and the other directors. Likewise, it includes a member of the Rectorate of the University of Bremen as well as the Managing Director of the Center for Multimedia in Teaching and Learning (ZMML) as advisory, non-voting members.

The Virtual Academy of Sustainability (VAS) is a scientific institution of the University of Bremen according to § 92 para. 1 of the Bremen Higher Education Act (BremHG) under the responsibility of the departments 02, 05, 07 and 10. and addresses all climate and sustainability interested faculty, institutes and facilities of the University.
