Content of the Course

The course "World Financial System and Sustainability" deals with the history of the financial system, explains the high level of over-indebtedness and its causes and explains step by step the functions of the world financial system as it is today. Within the event it will be explained how the financial crisis came about in 2009, what mechanisms were behind it and what political and economic action is necessary to prevent it from happening again. Furthermore, alternative solutions in terms of an eco-social social and economic order will be considered.

Acquisition of Competences

You know about the emergence of today's world financial system and its players and have an understanding of how it works. You will know about the high level of over-indebtedness and its causes, as well as the reasons for the outbreak of the 2009 financial crisis. You will also have knowledge of alternative ways of shaping the world financial system and the political and economic action required.

Exam Information

To receive a certificate of achievement and credit points, you must complete the course with an electronic exam. You can choose the examination date freely from several examination times in the semester. The examination takes place in presence.

  • Students of the University of Bremen take their exams in the university's test center.
  • Students from partner universities of the Virtual Academy of Sustainability take their exams on dates at their home university.

Target Group

The course is open to students of all disciplines. The offer is especially addressed to students of the University of Bremen and students of the partner universities of the Virtual Academy Sustainability. The content is designed as OER (Open Educational Resources) and therefore available for all interested parties. In principle, the learning videos can also be used in non-university settings. Thus, learners from other groups (e.g. companies) also have the opportunity to benefit from them.

Lecturers of the Course

Dr. Dirk Solte is a private lecturer at the University of St. Gallen and deputy to the Executive Board at the Research Institute for Applied Knowledge Processing. He works on explanatory and solution approaches for an ecosocial social and economic order. His focus is on the interaction of nature, culture (community and production factors) and "futures" (credit and the world financial system) for sustainability, prosperity and value creation.
