BRENA – the joint sustainability certificate of the universities in Bremen and Bremerhaven

Let’s move towards the future

The sustainability certificate “BRENA” is an additional qualification that certifies your acquisition of solid foundational knowledge, interdisciplinary key competences and practice-oriented applied knowledge for sustainable development. Participation in the certificate programme can be a step towards developing your academic profile during your studies and serve as an additional subject-related qualification.

The Certificate Program in Sustainability is a joint initiative of the four Bremen universities.

This project was financed by the climate protection programme of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen.

Since the winter semester 25/26, the University of Bremen, Bremen University of Applied Sciences, the University of the Arts Bremen and Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences have been offering this cross-university study-accompanying programme. The programme is coordinated by the Virtual Academy of Sustainability. Enrolled students from all Bremen higher education institutions can take part in this study-accompanying programme.

Structure of the Sustainability Certificate

The certificate of sustainability "BRENA" consists of three modules that must be completed.

Module 1 – Sustainability Basics

Module 2 – Sustainability: Perspectives and Contexts

Module 3 – Shaping Sustainable Development

Acquisition of Competences

  • Fundamental knowledge of sustainable development and key sustainability issues.
  • Understanding of different disciplinary perspectives, goal conflicts, and forms of knowledge transfer in the context of sustainable development.
  • Ability to develop, test, and help shape sustainable solutions in practical and project-based contexts.
  • Reflective competence for consciously shaping one’s own learning journey and one’s role in societal transformation processes.

Exam Information

The completion of the individual modules is based on the respective examination format of the courses attended. There is no final certificate examination. Throughout the certificate programme, the ungraded reflection portfolio is to be used continuously in order to document and reflect on your individual certificate journey.

Target Group

The course is open to students from all disciplines. It is aimed in particular at students of the participating higher education institutions. External participants are kindly asked to get in touch directly.

Duration

It is possible to join the sustainability certificate at any point during your studies. The overall duration until completion of the certificate depends on your individual learning path and the courses chosen within the modules; a minimum duration of two semesters is realistic.

Requirements

There are no general participation requirements for the certificate. Individual courses may have specific participation requirements. These are listed in the course catalogue.
