Content of the Course

In this course, degrowth economics will be discussed as a counterpart to the previously dominant focus of growth in economics. It explores the basics of the sustainability debate, explains the history of growth criticism, and dives into various dimensions of growth limits. Moreover, the course will not only present the challenges associated with current economic practices but also outline potential solutions and pathways for transformation, while also addressing rebound effects. Key concepts such as exnovation, subsistence, and regional economics will be explained and illustrated through practical examples.

  • Awareness of the issues associated with growth-oriented approaches and their impacts.
  • Advancing your understanding of the possibilities for shaping a post-growth economics and applying alternative economic practices.

Exam Information

To receive a certificate of achievement and credit points, you must complete the course with an electronic exam. You can choose the examination date freely from several examination times in the semester. The examination takes place in presence.

  • Students of the University of Bremen take their exams in the university's test center.
  • Students from partner universities of the Virtual Academy of Sustainability take their exams on dates at their home university.

Target Group

The course is open to students of all disciplines. The offer is especially addressed to students of the University of Bremen and students of the partner universities of the Virtual Academy Sustainability. The content is designed as OER (Open Educational Resources) and therefore available for all interested parties. In principle, the learning videos can also be used in non-university settings. Thus, learners from other groups (e.g. companies) also have the opportunity to benefit from them.

Lecturers of the Course

Niko Paech teaches and researches at the University of Siegen as a professor in the field of plural economics. In addition to post-growth economics, his research focuses on environmental economics, ecological economics and sustainability research.
